( The fall of Osnaburg is a well documented historical event, and the culmination of the Teutarchian Offensive. This document makes minimal effort to restate historical context. )
In the early morning of Aug 18, 89H.A. the third battalion finalized their siege of Hägetz, a township 18 kilometers south of Osnaburg. Hägetz held the southern mouth of the valley, with artillery positions overlooking both the forest road and the river. Once taken, fourth armored and fifth mounted began their approach to the capitol. The eighteenth battalion had held the northern valley town of Spoltau since the 15th, capturing a small but steady stream of fleeing populace.
Mounted scouts encountered minimal resistance along the forest road, and reached Osnaburg’s outskirts by 14:00. Minimal armed resistance among the farmlands were dispatched. Fourth armored reached the city’s walls by 20:30. Beyond guerrilla attacks, resistance was notably mild. No artillery nor magical defenses were raised. General ████ assumed a trap with nightfall and ordered siege perimeters established.
Watches overnight, once armor had powered their vehicles down, reported hearing a buzzing and/or ringing noise from within the city. Bivouacked troops in the valley reported dreamless fitful sleep.
At first light the main gate was shelled open. Fifth mounted stormed the city, firebombing the gatehouse, barracks, abandoned artillery, and municipal buildings in their path. The city was empty. No defense was raised. No traps sprung. There are no corroborated reports of a single man nor animal sighted within the walls.
Without a staffed fire brigade the fire spread, burning much of the city’s core. Historians use this point to heavily dispute the “empty city” narrative. Some (Bleaker, Adawice, Howne) claim the population must have been hidden in bunkers that burned and were lost. Others (Konynen, Privello) note the Teutarch tribunal’s significant knowledge of dark arts, and posit a number of alternative theories.
NREACH-009.REMAINS
The fire destroyed most freestanding homes in the city, and collapsed 2/3rds of larger masonry buildings. City hall was originally a castle’s keep, and only its modern additions fell, though the entire interior was gutted. The treasuries in the basement partially survived and were placed into the care of General ████. The tribunal temple was badly damaged in the fire but survived for 3 days until superstitious sappers explosively excavated the area with stolen shells.
See NREACH-009.DATA-SHEET-01 for a full and thorough table of all items retained in the city. Here, a shorter targetted account:
- TREASURY ONE
- 38,000 Teutarch Pennies
- ███ kg Gold
- ███ kg Gemstones
- TREASURY TWO
- 18 Teutarch Pennies
- ██ kg Gold
- 5x Stone Ornamental Funerary Caskets
- 20x Busts of Administrative Officials
- TREASURY THREE (fire damaged)
- ██ kg silver, likely once Teutarch Pennies
- ██ kg gold
- Significant losses in tapestries
- CITY HALL
- 2x Scrivener Chisels (intact)
- 11x Scrivener Chisels (badly damaged)
- The City Bell in 4x pieces. Found in basement 1, fallen from the belltower as its supports burned.
NREACH-009.REMAINS-ADDENDUM
In ██ H.A. a Holy Empire raid on the valley made off with two boatfuls of artifacts waiting on transport south. Heavy fighting in the region resulted in the exact records of the boat’s contents being lost.
NREACH-009.KONYNEN-THEORY
Empty Streets: Hints at the Final Hours of a Teutarch Osnaburg. Dr. Salman Konynen.
In light of the theories espoused in Morris Et. Al. we must reconsider the established hasty conclusions drawn by my contemporaries. Never a sharp mind has concluded an investigation without doubt.
